Reaching the Beach

If you remember- I once said I was doing a 200 mile
relay race with work. It consisted of a 12 person team
and each person ran 3 legs with a total distance of
11 to 22ish miles. It was more fun than it sounds!

We started off with a team dinner Thursday night to
Carbo load.

We packed  up the vans and headed to our hotel for the night.

We got as much sleep as possible and headed to check in on
Friday morning. It was like a 5 step process. It included
 a little race orientation.

We had a 10:20 start time so we had a little time to kill.
We road to the top of the mountain on the Polar Express.

Took some team photos.

And finally got ready to kill this race.

Lael was the first runner and he basically had to run up
a mountain for 2ish miles.

While he ran-
we piled into the van to meet him at the top.
Then it was Shayna's turn. Then mine.. James, Cara and
Karissa finished it up for us.

I averaged around a 9 minute mile for
my first run which was 6 miles.

After we finished our first legs- we had some down
time. We had some dinner- aka Panera.

Then decided some shopping was needed. We hit up
the Banana outlet. I found some sweet deals.

We quickly had to hit the road because van 2 was doing
so awesome! We got the transition area and got out
night gear together and stretched it out. Then our van
had to start it up again.

Karissa was supplying each runner with water
as they ran by.

Before I knew it, it was time for my second
run. It was around 6 miles. And I felt like I was sprinting.
It was pitch black out and you could barely see the ground..
even with the head lamp. I was very sure someone was
about to jump from the woods and take me. Maybe
I've watched too many horror movies but at least
it helped my pace.

Once we all finished, it was time to catch up on some
sleep. Or at least try to. Some of us slept on the floor.
By slept I mean I laid sideways and couldn't move my limbs.
James was excited.

I was squished.
Yup those are my sandals in my face.
Needless to say, I didn't get any sleep. But before I knew it,
it was time to run again. But this time- was the last time!
I took my last bathroom break, got my compression sleeves
on and I was ready!!

I slayed my last run. I averaged an 8:30 pace. Which to me
was great since I had already run 12 miles on no sleep
and my legs felt like 100lbs each. I finished my last
2.7 miles in 22:53. BOOM! I was done. And our team
was 3 hours ahead of schedule on projected time.

James was after me. But between miles 4 and 5, his knee gave out.
We had to make a quick decision. Cara finished his run and we moved
the rotation up by one. Which meant... Lael had to run a 4th leg. This
was a bummer because we had been sitting and hanging out
for awhile and he had to jump back in and run 7 miles!

We waited around before his run. I clearly took to the beer.

And I took to the beach.

This is where the last leg came through.

Before we knew it- it was Lael's last run. We met him with water
at every mile of the 7 mile run. He was averaging 7:30/8 min miles.
He was sprinting through hot hot weather. He killed the run.
We were done before I knew it. I felt so freaking accomplished.
We worked so hard as a team
and had some injuries along the way but we finished.
Not with the 3 hour lead we had on ourselves- but still
before our expected time.

Today- I feel good. Ok today I hurt a little. But running
is such a mental game. You want to quit. You want
to walk. You want to give up. I kept my head up.
Kept focused and at the end... fell in love.
With running again. It had become such a boring thing
in my life and I found a way to make goals and
make it exciting and fun all over again. Needless to say-
my running calendar is filling up. I'll be running a lot
more races. And I'd really love to run this one
again. Anyone with me?

There is always champagne.

Happy Hump Day.
Half way through the week never felt
so freaking good. It's been a rough week
over here. My running pains are getting worse
and I'm officially sidelining my self.

I really need serious rest. Not just because of running
but also because of the weekend we had.

Celebrating Ashly's 25th... there was champagne.
There is always champagne.

We had some fun. Too much?

The next day we got to know our city a little better.
We went on the duck boats!

Now I am taking it easy after all the excitement
and running pains.
This concept is a bit foreign to me.
It meant yoga with Bethenny.

My bedroom acted as a make shift yoga space.
I gotta work with what I got.

I wasn't relaxing with this.
I was 25% interested and 75% disturbed.
This isn't real fueling food. It's not even really
good "hi, I'm so hungover that I'm going to eat
so bad all day" food. It fake food wearing a costume
trying to pull some serious trickery.

Instead of those greasy numbers.. I've been eating
loads of these.
OVERNIGHT OATS!!
I'm seriously addicted.

I'm heading off to the great white north this weekend.
Yes- Canada! I'm flying over to Calgary on
Sunday. Another city.. another business trip.

Two breakfast deep

It's Saturday am and I've already accomplished
so much. I'm two breakfast deep and a run already under
my belt.

This was a good week full of quinoa.

Curry quinoa with brussel sprouts and an egg. Sounds
like a weird combo- but it was awesome.

Yesterday for lunch I had a huge arugula salad
with quinoa, beans, craisins, walnuts and loads
of veggies. And a few hershey kisses followed.

I wish I were eating these.

Sadly I am not. But maybe bagel Sunday is in order.
See- I believe in balance. Lots of people try and avoid
things but I'd go crazy if I did that. So I try to
eat really healthy about 85% of the time. I eat pounds
of veggies everyday. I snack on them, eat tons at dinner and I try
to include them in breakfast by hiding them in these overnight oats.

This was like eating chocolate pudding for breakfast.
Here is the recipe:

Chocolate Pudding Overnight Oats:
1 banana
1 cup almond milk
1 tbsp cocoa powder
1 tbsp almond/peanut butter
1.5 tbsp chia seeds
handful of kale

Blend ingredients.
Pour over 1/3 cup oats
Refrigerate overnight.
Enjoy!

See- balance can be awesome. I won't lie- I eat
chocolate everyday. I don't miss a single day. If I did,
I'd just die. Ok, maybe not. But I feel that way!

Luckily I love fruits, veggies and healthy things. You get one
body and I'd like to keep my insides in tact and healthy.
I try to avoid lots of "franken" foods and eat whole foods instead.
Everyone is of course different,
but if I can't read it.. I try not to eat it.

I went for a little 4 miler today to test my legs.
Yup, still in pain. It was a crappy run. I am aiming to
get my mileage down to under 9 minute miles right now.
Today... eh.

The rest of the day should be an awesome day. Eventful
to say the least!
 At 3ish I'm heading to...

watch the B's games. Playoffs baby!
I'll be sitting a cozy box enjoying a beer or
two with friends and cheering on our boys.

Tonight I'm heading out to celebrate Ashly's birthday!
We have lots planned for a fun filled weekend.

Have a great Saturday!

What I think about when I run

Today I got my pearly whites cleaned at the dentist.
Before I sat in the chair the hygienist told me I reminded
her of Zoe Deschanel. I don't see it but I'll take it as a
compliment.

Today I also got back into running!
After two weeks of staying away.. I got back
into it. It was the perfect night for running.
My mind started to wander with each step.
What did I think about?

1- "I think my pants are falling down."
2- "I think my underwear are falling down."
3- "Why is the scent of pizza slapping me in the
face? Oh- it's you."

4- "What a perfect running night."

5- "That guy was really good looking. I wonder if he saw me?"
6- "My allergies suck and I look like I'm
crying. "

7- "I want to be done running. I'm starving."

Ok- first 4 miler of the week is done. Over!
I came home and made a big batch of quinoa.
I mixed 1/4 quinoa, 1/4 cup cooked onion,
1 egg+2 egg whites and 1 tsp curry.

It was excellent. I followed this dinner up with
a 100 calorie klondike. YUMMMM!

I also made a batch of vegan overnight oats.
Green Monster addition. Looks delic right?!?

Ingredients:
1 banana
1 cup almond milk
1 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
1 tbsp almond butter
handful of kale
1/3 cup oats

Blend all ingredients except oats.
Mix oats and ingredients.
Refrigerate overnight.
Eat in the morning- this step will be
tomorrow for me and I can't wait!

Team Peeta!

This weather has been ridiculous lately. I've been taking it all in!
With this weather, it makes my running schedule a little easier to
tackle. My training hasn't exactly been fun but when I have a schedule
I tend to stick to it. My week of running looks like this:

Monday- day off- I actually ran to/from the gym and did some weights.
Tuesday- easy run 2 miles
Weds- day off
Thursday- Tempo 5 miler
Friday- easy run 2 miles
Saturday- day off
Sunday-10 miles- I'll probably cut it to 8.

Are you tired yet? I am just thinking about it.

I ran today and came home to make a tasty dinner.
I toasted some pine nuts then added sun dried tomato's
and tuna. Then I put it over arugula and added some balsamic
and olive oil. So good! I also had a wee bit of red wine to
ease my muscles.

Now- how to spend my night?

Easy guess!
I finished these books in a jiffy.

Then I got my hands on the 3rd book (thanks Mags!)
My life is controlled by these books. All I can think about
is reading these books at all hours of the day. I stay up late to
read more. So addicting.
Have you read them? They are amazing. And dare I say-
better than Twilight? Sorry Twi-hards- while I loved that series
this series is certainly more erie and sucked me into the
plot that this could be our world someday. Plus- I think the acting
in these movies will be 120% better. I'm now Team Peeta.
If he were real... we'd be dating. And he'd be 26, not 16.

Now me and this fella are spending some quality time
time together. We tried a walk today- no such luck.
We'll try another 5 feet tomorrow! Now we're off to read
and sip some wine.

I'll also be dreaming of my boyfriend.
I've always said I love a rugged man.

Boston to Zurich to Lucerne

Greetings from Lucerne, Switzerland!

Phew- it was a journey to get here.
It started at 7:00ish yesterday by car.
Ashly dropped me at the airport and I
checked in for my flight. I love airports!
I walk around until it's pretty much time
to board the flight.
I looked at food and watches while waiting to board.

I also looked at some chocolate.
It's giant chocolate at the airport!

Then it was time to board. I flew Swiss Air to Zurich.
I personally love Swiss and think there is no better
way to fly... unless it's first class.

I left around 9:30pm Boston time and arrived
at 10:30am-ish Switzerland time. There is a 6 hour
difference between me and the East Coast right
now. I then took the train from Zurich to Lucerne.
In total I've had about 2 hours of sleep. So that meant
drinking lots of espresso upon arrival!
Good thing the office here has a coffee/espresso/cappuccino
maker. I would be dead if it didn't.

I hurried out of work at 5:30 to unpack and walk
around to burn some energy. Instead it turned into
a night run. Lucerne is so beautiful and right out of a fairy tale.
And at night- even more picturesque.

This is the church near my hotel. The photos would
be better but it's pitch black here at 5pm.

I ran down the trail that hugs the Lake Lucerne. It was a perfect
night for running. There were some people out but it
was quiet on my run. The swans were already sleeping.
No joke- there are beautiful, white swans everywhere here.
I think Walt Disney came here and based every fairy tale
and movie on this place.

Here is Lucerne at night. You can
see some sailboats if you squint.

And the amphitheater stage near work. I love this park.
There are always old men playing Bocce here in the
mornings.
I'm super lucky to travel for work. Although it is for
work, I'm still lucky to see so many beautiful places.
Whether I'm traveling for business or pleassure, I love to run
in new places. You never know what is around each corner.
I don't suggest running everywhere but Lucerne is
extremely safe so you can be out pretty much any
time of day.

I am off to take a bubble bath and get ready for bed.
Yes- it's 7:30 here. I don't care. I'm tired.

funny side note- my computer is putting everything
in German. It's very confusing and it won't translate to
english. At least it's entertaining.
